Marvel Cosmic Invasion, A 90s Inspired Beat’em Up

Nintendo recently had one of their Directs where they showed off the trailers for a few new games. One of them stood out to me. It looked like a revival of the 1990s beat’em ups from Konami, Capcom, Data East, and Sega.

A Retro ’90s beat’em up.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion is from the same studio behind Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. I remember enjoying that game quite a bit, so I have high hopes for this one.

The trailer was only a minute and thirty seconds, so there isn’t too much to go on. A little gameplay was shown, which looked good. The cutscene didn’t look like it belonged in the same game.

Taken from the Marvel Entertainment YouTube Channel

That was the only part of this trailer that felt off to me. I can’t put my finger on why it seemed strange. The gameplay looked good, and I liked the roster of characters they showed off.

The roster is made up of superheroes that appeared in Marvel’s previous beat’em ups, as well as a few characters aligned with the comic book company’s cosmic setting. Here is a list of the characters:

  • Captain America
  • Spider-Man
  • Venom
  • Wolverine
  • Storm
  • Nova
  • Phyla-Vell

This is just what was shown off, so more might be added. Nova and Phyla-Vell might be fun to play as. I don’t know too much about them, so seeing the two in this game is fun.

In total, there will be 15 playable characters in the game. This is based on the game’s Steam Page. It will be cool to see who else gets added.

Based on the enemies, the Annihilation Wave, Advanced Idea & Mechanics, and the Sentinels, I can make a few guesses. There will probably be more X-Men added, as well as Avengers. It wouldn’t surprise me to see some of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the game. I’m not too familiar with the cosmic landscape, so it will be fun to learn more about characters I haven’t heard about.

The storyline hasn’t been revealed yet, aside from Annihilus attacking the Marvel Universe. Normally, beat’em ups don’t have an elaborate story. This is something I’m very excited to see what they do with it.

I don’t know if they would do this, but seeing the original Guardians of the Galaxy would be cool. Since most of Marvel’s creative direction is controlled by the movies, I won’t hold my breath.

From what was shown in the trailer, the gameplay looks great. Each character’s super attack is shown, and there is a tag team or combo attack. It will be interesting to see how this works in the game.

High Expectations

I’m looking forward to this one. The game doesn’t have a release date at this time. The trailer and Steam page say 2025. Some of the articles I’ve read list Holidays 2025, probably around Christmas.

Once more information is out on this, I’ll give an update. It looks like the game is going to be released on all platforms (Switch, Xbox, PS5, Steam, etc.). I haven’t seen if it will be on Game Pass, and even if it isn’t, I’ll probably play it on Xbox.

I’ll start doing these news posts when I come across something that interests me. If you liked this post, please check out my other posts on other beat’em up games, such as King of Dragons or Armored Warriors.
