This should be fun to go through! Sweet Home and Robotrek are very different games, and don’t play like other RPGs. With how different these games are, this will get a little strange as I go through them. After all, one is pure horror, and the other is a comedic science fiction game.
Sweet Home is a hybrid of a turn based RPG and a survival horror game. There is more of a strategic element to this game as you have to manage your inventory, coordinate your parties, and solve puzzles. It is also a much smaller game in terms of scale when compared to other games.
Robotrek is a science fiction RPG that has a more tactical approach to combat. This game’s story gets increasingly bizarre as the game goes on, which is awesome! It is a little easier than some of the RPGs on the SNES, and also has the player solve some puzzles. It is a very fun game,
I really like both of these games! It is always fun for me to do one of these comparisons when I like both games because it makes me think about them a little more. Let’s get into both of these games and see what they have to offer.
Game Descriptions/Overviews
Aside from being RPGs, there aren’t too many similarities. They both have good stories and bring something totally different to the table. One of them is a bit more grounded, and the other is just bonkers.
Sweet Home is a horror game that features quite a few elements that would become staples of the survival horror genre. This is a movie based game, and the plot is pretty close to what happens in the movie. Some of the scenes are recreated, as are a few of the puzzles. It ends in a similar fashion to the movie, with the player fighting against an evil spirit.
Robotrek is a science fiction RPG that has a lot of comedy in it. This game gets progressively more bonkers as it goes on, which is awesome! Everything looks very good, and I like how the enemies look like capsule toys. The story starts out fairly normal, and then travels through time and goes into space. You play as an inventor, and there is a simple crafting system in the game.
These are just brief descriptions of these games. There is more to them, but I want to keep this brief. Each of them has a lot to offer, and they bring something different to the table. Let’s get into the main differences and core mechanics.
Main Differences
There are a lot of differences between these games. They have different settings, combat, stories, and gameplay. There is so much I could put there that I’m having trouble limiting it to just a few. I’ll do my best to keep this brief.
Robotrek takes place across a planet, in different time periods, and in space. It is a grand adventure that takes you on a bonkers journey. Sweet Home takes place in a mansion, and your goal is to defeat a ghost and escape the mansion alive. The stakes in this game are much lower than those of Robotrek.
These games have different approaches to combat. Robotrek is much more tactical in its approach and uses an active time system where you can’t necessarily take your time during battles. Sweet Home is a turn based game. However, you can have your five characters divided into two or more parties, and can call for help from the other parties. Also, you only fight one enemy at a time in Sweet Home, so it is much simpler.
The stories in these games are very different. Robotrek is more of an absurd comedy. Nothing is really taken seriously, and things get increasingly bonkers. Sweet Home is a horror tale, just like the movie it is based on. You control a group of filmmakers who get trapped in a mansion. The goal is to escape and defeat a malevolent spirit.
The overall gameplay is different. While there are a few similarities, most of the gameplay is very different. There is more inventory management in Sweet Home, Robotrek has a crafting system, and the puzzles and other obstacles are more complex in Sweet Home.
There is so much more I could get into here. I’ll go over some of the other differences in the next section. Because there are so many, it is hard to keep these sections short. Stuff like this makes things more fun for me because they’re quite challenging.
Comparing Core Mechanics (Combat, Story, Visuals, etc)
This is where I’ll try to touch on some of the minor differences by looking at the core mechanics. The visual storytelling, tone, combat, and other gameplay are all quite different. I’ll try to keep this brief and not repeat what I’ve already gone over.
Robotrek uses mostly in game graphics to tell its story. There are a few cut scenes, but these are used more at the beginning and the end. Sweet Home uses way more cut scenes to tell the player what is happening. They look very good and add a lot to the story.
The tone of these games is very different. Robotrek is more light hearted, and nothing is taken all that seriously. Sweet Home is the opposite, where things are more life and death.
I’ve talked about the combat a bit already. Robotrek only has the player controlling one character at a time and fighting multiple enemies. Sweet Home has the player control up to five characters at once, and you only fight one enemy. There is also only one real boss character in Sweet Home. In Robotrek, you have several bosses, similar to how other RPGs do things.
They both have something that really helps them stand out in terms of gameplay. For Robotrek, it is the crafting system that really is something cool to see from a game on the SNES. Sweet Home brings in some inventory management and a heavier focus on puzzle solving.
There are so many other things I could get into. I’m really trying to keep these sections brief, so I’m glossing over a few things. Let’s get into what each of these games does better than the other.
What Does Sweet Home do Better?
Sweet Home is a very unique game, and it does a lot of things well. It has some great cutscenes, really interesting combat, great puzzles, and a very good story. Many of the reasons why I love the game are because of how different it is.
This is a Famicom game, and it looks excellent! This game looks as good as several of the SNES games. I love the cutscenes in the game, the enemies look amazing, and the house has a creepy atmosphere.
The combat is turn based, and can be quite basic. There is a heavy focus on the items your character has and a prayer mechanic that replaces a magic system. One of the coolest things is how you can summon the other party to come and help you.
In this game, you can create several parties of characters. You can have a maximum of three characters in a party, so you end up with a group of three and another with two. When combat starts, you can call for help, and then lead the other party to the battle. It is a nice way to level up all your characters.
Like many survival horror games, this game has a bunch of puzzles for you to solve. You need to manage your inventory to get through them. Each character has a key item that can’t be discarded, and you’ll need them to get through the obstacles in the game and beat the final boss.
The game’s story is very good. There aren’t too many twists to it, and it mostly follows the events of the movie. You do find clues from another group that attempted to defeat the ghost, which is a new addition. It adds a lot to the story.
These are the things that I think Sweet Home does better than Robotrek. Many of these are simply personal preferences. There are some good things in each game, which makes this very close. Let’s get into what Robotrek does better.
What Does Robotrek do Better?
There are quite a few things that Robotrek does better than Sweet Home. It has a wonderful crafting system, a bonkers story, and a very good combat system. I’m sure there are other things, and if I think of them, then I’ll add those at the end.
It is a little rare to come across a crafting system in a retro game. They do exist, but it isn’t the norm. Robotrek has a very good one, and you can learn to make more items as the game goes on. When you gain a level, you can learn a new pattern by finding and reading a book. This system is how you build your robots and their equipment.
The story gets increasingly bizarre as the game continues. If you’re looking for something funny from your RPG, then this is a good choice. It is a very original story, and I like how the game handles all of this. It can get a little confusing, but not too confusing.
Robotrek uses a tactical approach to fighting. You use one of your three robots to fight enemies, and you can move around a grid to fight enemies. The system is an active time combat, which means you don’t really take turns in a traditional sense. Instead of magic, you program attacks for your robots.
These are some of the things that I think are better in Robotrek. There are some unique things in this game, and I can see if they turn someone off. It is an excellent game, and I really like how everything is done. Let’s get into which game is better and which I would rather play.
Which is Better Overall and Why?
In this case, I think Sweet Home is the better game. It is the one that I had more fun with, and it is newer to me. I really like the story, the gameplay, and I love the setting.
Sweet Home has a great story! Each character is very important to completing the game, and there are little notes from a previous group that found themselves trapped in the mansion. There are a few moments from the movie worked into the story as well. It is surprisingly faithful to the movie.
The gameplay is excellent. It does take a little while to get used to, but after that, everything is great. I love the inventory management in the game, the puzzle solving is great, and the combat is very satisfying.
This game uses its setting very well. You can see how parts of this game inspired the Resident Evil games, as the mansion is huge. It feels like you’re trapped in a massive place with secret doors that can lead you back to other areas.
There is a lot more that I could say about this game. When I first played Sweet Home, I didn’t really get it. As I kept going, I found it to be one of the best RPGs from the late 1980s. I can see why Nintendo of America didn’t localize it, because there would’ve been some serious edits, and it is a little confusing at the beginning of the game. Let’s get into which game I would rather play.
Which Would I Rather Play?
This is one of the times that I can’t pick one over the other for this section. Both of these games are a lot of fun to play for different reasons. I love the stories, the gameplay, and the graphics in these games.
The stories for Robotrek and Sweet Home are both very good. I like the comedic tone of Robotrek and how things get increasingly absurd as it goes on. Sweet Home is an excellent movie based game that has a creepy story and setting.
Each game has a little twist to the gameplay. Robotrek has its crafting system and tactical combat that help it stand out from other games. Sweet Home has a lot of unique features because it is a hybrid of genres. It has more elements of a survival horror game in it.
Both games have great graphics. Robotrek’s are bright and colorful. Everything looks happy, which goes well with the overall tone of the game’s story. Sweet Home is the best looking NES/Famicom game that I’ve ever seen. They are dark and creepy.
Those are the big reasons why I would want to revisit these games. I really couldn’t single one out here because I enjoy both of these games. Even if I think one is better, I really love both of these games.
Conclusion
These games are radically different, and that made something like this a lot of fun to do. Once you get past the core mechanics of these games, there are too many things that they have in common. This is going to be a recurring thing when I compare some of the more unique RPGs on all the consoles.
Sweet Home is a game that I didn’t know about until the 2010s. It took me a while to play it, and once I did, I found it to be one of my favorite RPGs. I like weird or unique games, and this definitely falls into both categories.
I have more memories of playing Robotrek. It is a game that I first discovered through emulation, and then went out to get the game on the SNES. Robotrek felt like something different from what my friends were playing back then, which is part of the reason I really liked it.
I had thought I had already done this. As I started looking through all of the posts in this series, I realized that I hadn’t. There are a bunch of very unique RPGs on the SNES, and they will create some very interesting matchups in the future.
If you liked this post, check out the others in this series. Such as Phantasy Star II vs Phantasy Star IV or Phantasy Star III vs Phantasy Star IV.
