Which is Better? Phantasy Star vs Sweet Home

YouTube Reviews for Phantasy Star (Link) and Sweet Home (link)

These comparisons keep getting tougher. Phantasy Star is an excellent RPG, and I really like that it is different from the more generic high fantasy story. Sweet Home is a good RPG, but it is a hybrid of two genres and also has a different setting.

Both of these games are fairly new to me. I like both of them for different reasons, and they stand out from the other RPGs on the home consoles from the 1980s. With one of them being so different, this might be another case where I think one is better, but I want to go back and play the other more.

Phantasy Star is one of the games that shows off what the Master System could do. It looks great, and the story is very fun. Sweet Home also looks great, and I love that it leans into the horror of its source material. I’ll get more into both games in just a second.

Game Descriptions/Overviews

These games have a handful of similarities, and just about every RPG has some horror, fantasy, and science fiction elements to them. What is different here is that Sweet Home is almost entirely horror, and Phantasy Star leans into science fiction. This is one of those cases where one game wants to tell a grand story, while the other is telling a smaller story. It helps that Sweet Home is a movie-based game, and the developers had to work within the existing story.

Phantasy Star is a space-faring adventure that starts as a revenge story and turns into something grander. You go on an adventure to gather your party members, learn about what is happening in the solar system, and eventually fight a tyrannical king. It also sets up some other plot points that are explored in the other games in the series.

Sweet Home is an adaptation of a horror movie of the same name. You control five characters, and assemble two or more parties from those five. Each of them is needed to beat the game, and you have to solve puzzles in your quest to defeat a ghost and escape the mansion you’re trapped in.

I know these are simplified and fairly vague descriptions of these games, but that was kind of the point of this section. There is a lot more to get into with these games, and I’ll be going over the major differences between them. There are a lot of them, so let’s get into a few of them.

Main Differences

There are a number of them to go over here. The differences I want to focus on are the story, setting, and gameplay. I’ll be saving the graphics and combat for the next section.

The two stories are very different. Phantasy Star is a grander story where you explore a solar system, learn about the history of the planets, and eventually defeat a tyrannical king and the source of all evil in this game’s universe. Sweet Home has some of that, but on a smaller scale, where everything takes place in a mansion, and you have to defeat a restless spirit.

Some of this carries over to the setting. Phantasy Star is a blend of science fiction and fantasy. It has magic and monsters as well as robots. Sweet Home is a somewhat grounded horror story where “magic” is limited or non-existent, depending on how you want to look at it.

Gameplay is one of the biggest differences between these two games. Phantasy Star is a more traditional console RPG. You’re exploring dungeons, grinding for levels, and controlling a party of characters. With Sweet Home, some of that is here, but you’re also managing items, solving puzzles, and managing two or more parties of your characters.

A lot of the other differences are fairly minor, or are things that both games do, but are better in one game. Comparing anything to games like Sweet Home or Destiny of an Emperor can be difficult. It isn’t impossible, and can be difficult and resulting in some nitpicking.

Comparing Core Mechanics (Combat, Story, Visuals, etc)

I’ll be focusing on the combat and visuals for this section. There is so much more I could say about the gameplay, and I’ll briefly touch on that. I just want to keep this as brief as I can since these posts are already a little longer than they probably need to be.

At first glance, the combat isn’t too different. Both games are turn-based RPGs, but the magic and combat are a little different. Sweet Home doesn’t really have magic aside from a prayer mechanic that has more uses outside of combat, and you can get through most of the game without using it during battle. Phantasy Star is very different; it has a set of offensive and defensive magic, and you can’t call in support from a second party of characters.

The differences in the visuals bleed over to the combat as well. Phantasy Star is a bright and colorful game, and Sweet Home is a dark game that matches its horror theme. In battle, Phantasy Star has more animations for its enemies than Sweet Home does. Both games have the player fighting one enemy at a time.

I also have to mention the dungeons. Phantasy Star’s dungeons play like a dungeon crawler, and Sweet Home doesn’t have a separate dungeon at all. The whole game in Sweet Home is a dungeon.

There are a few more things I didn’t go into here. Sweet Home has more mechanics that you would find in a survival horror game, and you don’t really need to grind for levels. With Phantasy Star and many other RPGs from this era, it is in your best interest to grind for levels. Let’s get into what I think each game does better than the other.

What Does Phantasy Star do Better?

There are a lot of things that Phantasy Star does better than Sweet Home. It is a more complete RPG, while Sweet Home is a hybrid of an RPG and a survival horror game. Aside from that, it has better graphics, gameplay, and I like the story more.

Overall, the graphics are better in Phantasy Star. This game is showing off what the Master System can do, and I like the cutscenes more than those in Sweet Home. The animations on the enemies, the bright and colorful visuals, and the sprites are more detailed.

If I’m just looking at the RPG gameplay between these two games, then Phantasy Star is better. I like that each character has a role in combat, and the magic system is much better. It is overall better than Sweet Home when it comes to turn-based graphics.

I like the story more than Sweet Home’s. This is the most subjective thing I could think of. I enjoy science fiction more than horror, even though I like both stories.

If I thought about it, I could probably think of more things. Those are the three areas where I think Phantasy Star is better. This is a hard comparison because there isn’t an equivalent to some of what Sweet Home does. Phantasy Star is more of a traditional console RPG than what Capcom did with its game.

What Does Sweet Home do Better?

The things that Sweet Home does better are tied to it being a unique game with a different style of gameplay. Sweet Home does a good job of mixing up the gameplay so you don’t need to grind for levels, assuming that you aren’t running from fights. It also includes puzzles that help to distract the player from having only one location to explore. The game also does a good job of making you think a bit more, as you have to manage your inventory more than in other RPGs.

Sweet Home is a hybrid of a turn-based RPG and a survival horror game. This makes things a little complicated when talking about what it does better than any other game. I do like how it does something different than just recreating the same formula as other RPGs on the home console.

I like the inventory management, how each character is important to the gameplay, and how you have to use each of them to beat the game. While it can be frustrating at times, learning how to use each character’s tools and items to get around problems is a lot of fun.

Sweet Home is a fun and creepy horror game. I can see why it wasn’t brought over to North America, because a lot of the content would’ve had to be cut out. Overall, it is a very fun game, but it can take some time to get used to.

Which is Better Overall and Why?

When I look at both of these games as RPGs, I have to say that Phantasy Star is the better game overall. This is closer than you might think because both of these games have similar things in them, but Phantasy Star does a better job of doing them. It has better combat, better graphics, and I like the story more.

From an RPG perspective, the gameplay is what you want from a game like this. It is a science fantasy game, so you have attack and healing magic, and the monsters look excellent. I also enjoy that you go on a quest to find your party instead of being given them at the beginning of the game.

Both games have cutscenes and are fairly cinematic. Phantasy Star has better cutscenes, and I like the way they look with their comic book style. The enemies also have better animations for their attacks, and the way the combat attacks are done looks better.

The stories are different, and I enjoy Phantasy Star’s more than Sweet Home. It is a space fairing adventure where you explore a solar system. It also has some elements of Greek Mythology tossed in for good measure.

If you want a fun but challenging RPG, then this is a good choice. It does have more grinding than Sweet Home, but that is part of the gameplay. It is easier to understand and play than Sweet Home.

Which Would I Rather Play?

Sweet Home is the game I would rather go back and play again. It is such a unique game, and I like the story. It has some gameplay mechanics that you won’t find in other retro RPGs from the 1980s, and that is a big part of why I like it.

I love how the game handles its party system and utilizes all the playable characters effectively. Each of them has a role in the game, and you’ll need each of them to beat the game. They each have a tool that is needed to solve puzzles and get through some areas.

This is a horror game, and I like being scared, or at the very least, seeing some creepy images. Sweet Home delivers something different from the other games I’ve played. I love the story, the characters, and the gameplay. It isn’t for everyone, but I had a ton of fun playing it.

Conclusion

These two games have quite a few differences between them. One feels like a bigger game, and the other is smaller and is a hybrid of genres. Sweet Home has more in common with a survival horror game, which is a genre that it helped to inspire.

The stories are always my favorite parts of these retro games. I tend to focus on them more than the other parts of the game. What would be really cool is if there were a combination of these two games, like a science fiction and horror RPG. A turn-based one and not an action RPG.

They’re both RPGs, but different visions of what an RPG can be. I like both of them for what they are. Phantasy Star is the start of one of my favorite series of retro RPGs, and Sweet Home is something different that is a hybrid of two genres that you might not think would work together.
