Final Fantasy and Sweet Home are both turn-based RPGs, but they are very different games once you get passed that. There are some similarities between them when it comes to combat and the core gameplay. For the most part, these games are quite different from each other.
Comparing anything to Sweet Home is going to be difficult because it is a hybrid of genres. The game has a lot of mechanics that you’ll find in a survival horror game, which is a genre that this game helped to create. You can still compare it to other RPGs, but it will be a little difficult when looking at something more traditional, either on the home console or computer.
Final Fantasy is a fun game, but as I’ve mentioned before, I’m a little tired of playing it. It’s like if you eat your favorite food every day, at some point, you’re going to get sick of it and need a break. I feel like I have to mention this every time I write or talk about this game. I still like it, even if I don’t love it as much as I used to.
Game Descriptions/Overviews
We have two different approaches to an RPG. One has a larger setting and is trying to tell a grander story. The other plays more like a survival horror game because it is a hybrid of the two genres.
Final Fantasy is a high fantasy RPG. This means you’re fighting monsters, using magic, and there are more elements you’ll find in a fantasy novel. You create a party of four characters, collect key items, and fight your way through several bosses.
Sweet Home is a horror game that combines an RPG with a survival horror game. It takes place in a mansion, has you control five characters, and you have to solve puzzles that require you to manage your inventory. It is a turn-based RPG, but it also has quite a bit in common with a survival horror game.
There is so much more I could say about these two games, but I want to keep things moving. Once you get past the basics that you’ll find in most RPGs from the 1980s and 1990s, that is when these games differ greatly. Let’s get into the major differences between these games.
Main Differences
There are a lot of major differences between these two games. I’ll be focusing on three or four that I think are the biggest differences. The party system, setting, and gameplay are the areas I’m going to be focusing on.
Final Fantasy has the player create a party of four characters. They have set classes and roles in the game and combat. You have to give these four characters names, classes, and decide how you want the game to be set up for yourself. With Sweet Home, you have five characters who have tools, but no classes. Each plays the same, aside from having a tool that performs a specific function. You can create a party of three characters, but you can also control them individually.
The gameplay is different between these games, and it does tie into the party system. Final Fantasy is more straightforward and similar to other RPGs on the home console. Sweet Home has the player doing more inventory management and puzzle-solving. You also have to deal with more than one party to complete parts of the game.
Sweet Home is a horror game that takes place in a mansion. Final Fantasy is a high fantasy game that takes place across a planet. While there are some horror themes in Final Fantasy, they aren’t the core themes of the game like they are with Sweet Home.
These are the three big things I wanted to cover. I’ll get into the smaller differences in the next section, where I’ll compare some of the core mechanics. That is where I’ll go over the visuals and story.
Comparing Core Mechanics (Combat, Story, Visuals, etc)
Sweet Home and Final Fantasy have some big differences when it comes to graphics, combat, and the story. I’ve covered some of this already, so I’ll try to keep this brief. These games were released two years apart, and it looks like Capcom did a better job of trying something different.
You can tell that Capcom knew how to take advantage of the hardware by 1989. Sweet Home has better and more detailed graphics. Some of this might be due to how small this game is when compared to Final Fantasy. It stays in one location, but offers some variety with the environments that you explore.
The two games are pretty different when it comes to combat. Final Fantasy is almost exactly like other high fantasy games on the home console. Sweet Home has some mechanics that you aren’t going to find in other games. You can call the other party for support, and the “prayer” mechanic doesn’t act like a magical attack, and has more uses out of combat than it does during battles.
The plots of these games are dramatically different. In Sweet Home, you’re trapped in a mansion and have to figure out the mysteries of what happened there, along with defeating an evil spirit. In Final Fantasy, your characters appear in a world and are part of a prophecy. You don’t know why they are, because that isn’t important.
These games have the same base gameplay, like turn-based combat and a party system. After that, they’re very different games. While they are RPGs, they don’t have that much in common.
What Does Sweet Home do Better?
Sweet Home does a number of things better than Final Fantasy. It has better graphics, the story is better, and I like how it uses the playable characters. Much of this has to do with the differences in the gameplay, but I still think this game does a better job of telling its story than Final Fantasy does.
The characters in Sweet Home feel more like real people. They have things to say about what is going on, they react to things, and they matter more than the characters in Final Fantasy. In that game, the characters have no dialogue, don’t have names, and don’t have backstories. This has a lot to do with Sweet Home being based on a movie, but the developers still made their main characters matter more to me.
The graphics in Sweet Home are considerably better than those in Final Fantasy. It is more cinematic, the enemy sprites are more detailed, and I like how the game has little cutscenes using in-game graphics and animations. I am a fan of horror games, and this one looks very creepy the further you get in it.
I enjoyed the story in Sweet Home more than the one in Final Fantasy. Part of this might be that Sweet Home is newer to me, but overall, I found the story to be more entertaining. There is something about a good ghost story that I love, and the story in Sweet Home is a very good ghost story.
There are a few more things that Sweet Home does better than Final Fantasy, but these are the three big ones that I wanted to cover. As I play this game and learn how to play it, I might find more. At this point, I’ve only beaten this game once, so I have more to discover.
What Does Final Fantasy do Better?
Final Fantasy feels more familiar to me because of how many times I’ve played it. This is an easier team to pick up and understand than Sweet Home, and it does a better job of limiting the amount of backtracking required. It takes place on a world map and is less claustrophobic than Sweet Home.
This game is more user-friendly when compared to Sweet Home. The controls are much simpler, the combat is straightforward, and you have a good idea of how to play right off the bat. You can also customize your experience a little by selecting the character classes before the start of the game.
Final Fantasy does a better job when it comes to the battles. They’re more complicated and require some strategy. A lot of this has to do with the game having a more complex magic system, and you’ll fight more enemies at once, as well as having more than one boss fight.
The game’s world is much larger than Sweet Home’s. Instead of the game taking place in one location, like Sweet Home, Final Fantasy has you exploring a world. Both are very different in the way that they tell their stories, and Final Fantasy tells a much larger and grander story.
I’m sure there are others that people would include in this. A lot of this is a personal preference on what type of game you want to play. Final Fantasy does several things well, and it is an improvement over several RPGs that came before it.
Which is Better Overall and Why?
I’m going to say that Final Fantasy is the better game. If I’m going by “what game is the better RPG,” then it isn’t Sweet Home. The first Final Fantasy is a more straightforward RPG, which has more of the tropes and game mechanics that you would find in a console RPG.
This is the easier game to pick up and play, and it sticks to one genre. Final Fantasy has everything you might want in a retro RPG from the 1980s, and it started several tropes you’ll see in the rest of the series. This is an easier game to play than Sweet Home.
It has a story that has become generic because this type of story has been repeated over the years. It is a high fantasy story where you collect key items, restore light to four orbs, and eventually fight a god, in this case, Chaos. Some version of this story would be repeated in other games.
While I think that this game is better than Sweet Home, it isn’t the one I would want to play. It is a fun game to revisit, and I had a lot of fun when I was playing it. I would rather play Sweet Home.
Which Would I Rather Play?
Sweet Home is the game that I would rather go back and play. Some of this has to do with only having played this game once, but I also had more fun with it. I think this is one of the better games that I’ve played in 2025, and I would love to go back to see what I missed.
The graphics are fantastic! I love how the creatures look, especially later in the game. The cutscenes look creepy at times, and they often recreate scenes from the movie. These are done well, and I got a kick out of watching them since I have watched the film.
I like how the game uses the main characters. Each of them has a tool that is needed in the game; some are more useful than others, but they’re all needed. You can also talk to them, and they have something to say about the situation or what skills they bring to the table.
The story was also something that I enjoyed because I like horror movies, and this was based on one. There were some liberties taken with the source material to make this into a game, but the main plot is there, and a few of the subplots that made sense ended up in the game. It also ends in a similar way to the movie, but adds an end credit scene that teases a possible continuation, which will never come.
Sweet Home is a unique game when it comes to retro RPGs. I feel the same way about it as I felt about Destiny of an Emperor. Both games are difficult to compare with other games, but not impossible.
Conclusion
These games are quite different, and that made it a little hard to compare them. They take different approaches to the genre. Final Fantasy feels like plenty of other high fantasy RPGs, and Sweet Home is something different. I also enjoy the setting of Sweet Home more than other games because I really like horror films.
I really like Sweet Home; it is such a fun take on an RPG. I love the story and how the game uses each of the main characters. There is a learning curve with the controls and game mechanics, but it isn’t too difficult to get the hang of it.
Final Fantasy is the game that really got me into RPGs, and it will always have a special place in my heart. I’ve just played it too many times, and when I play it, I feel like I’m going through the motions. I enjoy it, but not enough to beat out a new game that I enjoy as much as Sweet Home.
