Mud Lords is an upcoming indie game that is in the early stages of development. It is an open-world action RPG that has a “living, breathing universe.” The developer plans to focus the game on exploration.
This sounds like a good start for a game. I usually play games for the story, and there isn’t much of that on the game’s itch.io page. It is still early in the game’s development, so I’m expecting that to change.
I would like to know if this game will be similar to a sandbox. I know that it is an open-world game, but there could still be an overarching narrative or goal for you to achieve. Let’s review the available information on the game, and hopefully, we’ll have a few updates over the next few weeks.

What do we know so far?
There isn’t too much information on the game’s itch.io page (Link), but they do promise to update it weekly. The planned timeframe for the game’s development is 12 weeks, but I’m unsure when that timer started. There are no details about an overarching narrative in the game at this point.
Here is what the developer is promising at this point:
- Open-world RPG
- Explore forgotten villages
- Uncover ancient secrets
- Fight Colossi
- Humor
There is some dialogue in the game’s trailer, and the developer says that each village you visit will have a story. It sounds like an interesting game, and maybe we’ll learn more about the story as the weeks go by.
The setting remains somewhat of a mystery at this point. While we can see that it is going to be a medieval setting with swords and shields, I didn’t see magic in the game. There is also no mention of this on the game’s page.
Based on the limited information available, I would say it is a dark fantasy or medieval-themed game. As the weeks go by, I’m sure we’ll know more. I would just be speculating at this point, and I want to avoid doing that as much as possible.
Currently, the game is priced at three dollars and is only available on Windows. I didn’t see if there was a plan to release the game on other systems. Since this is an indie game, I’m assuming the developer is waiting to see how successful the game is before committing to something like that.
Wrap Up
The game looks decent enough. At this point in the game’s development, I’m not sure about it. While it looks decent, I don’t have enough information about the overarching narrative or if it is simply a sandbox.
Mud Lords is still in early access, so there is room for improvement. I’ll give it a few weeks and check in on the game. That way, there will be more meat on the game’s bones.
At this point, I think there is a lot of potential. I have some doubts about the dialogue based on what I’ve seen in the trailer. Once I know more about the story, I’ll be able to provide a more informed recommendation about whether I would recommend the game.
