Critical Shift, First Impressions of a new Horror Game

Steam Page Link

X-COM is one of my favorite games. I prefer the games from the 1990s, but all the games are fun. There are also a fair number of clones and games that were inspired by it.

Critical Shift is one of the modern indie games that looks like it has taken inspiration from it. The game reminds me of a long-forgotten clone of X-COM that was released in the late 1990s. I’m sure that this game will be considerably better than Abomination: The Nemesis Project.

Let’s focus on Critical Shift first, since it is coming out soon, and is the more interesting game. It currently doesn’t have a release date, but I’m looking forward to it.

About Critical Shift

This is a turn-based strategy RPG where you control a squad of troops as they explore an Arctic research facility. There isn’t too much on the story at this point, but it is an interesting setup.

It looks like a mix of X-COM and Dead Space. The trailer shows that you’re fighting cyborgs, or mutated humans. I’m sure this will all get explained in the game.

It is a simple premise. A research facility sent a distress call after an experiment went out of control. An entity is alluded to, which I’m assuming caused all of the terrible things to happen.

It sounds like several science fiction novels and movies. It also sounds a bit like Doom. I like what has been revealed about the story, and I’m looking forward to it.

The gameplay looks like one of the modern X-COM games. The trailers don’t show too much about the mechanics, but we can see some skill trees. From what I’ve seen so far, it looks good.

On First Glance

When I saw the first few seconds of the trailer, I immediately thought about Abomination: The Nemesis Project. This was a poorly executed X-COM clone from the late 1990s. It wasn’t a good game, but it had a great story.

Aside from the visuals and the gameplay, there aren’t any other similarities between the two. I’m sure Critical Shift will be better than that game.

It has a very cool setting that feels like it could be a tie-in to the SCP Foundation. Any time I see a game with the “experiment gone wrong” plot, I think of those stories.

Wrap UP

This looks like a good game. It didn’t stray too far from the X-COM formula like the game Capes did. I am interested in seeing if this is a stand-alone game or if it is one mission in something bigger.

Either way, this will be a game that I would want to play. I’m a big fan of the X-COM games, at least the strategy games and not the first-person shooters. There is a lot more to learn about this game, and I’ll update you as I find out more.

Once there is a release date or early access announcement, I’ll update this. Things are still early, but the gameplay looks good, and the story sounds interesting. Hopefully, there will be more games like this in the future.
